What is Soulard Nation?
Soulard Nation is a community of St. Louis performers who work to actively improve the St. Louis live entertainment scene. We encourage all St. Louis performers to come to the Great Grizzly in Soulard each and every Thursday from 7pm to Midnight for the Soulard Nation Live! open mic + showcase. This is a weekly opportunity to mingle with industry professionals, share your ideas for improvements to the scene, and show off your skills.
What does Soulard Nation do for artists?
Soulard Nation exists to create the infrastructure necessary to produce and promote live events for artists in Saint Louis. The long term strategy of Soulard Nation is to create a national platform to exhibit the talents of St. Louis artists.
Soulard Nation believes entertainment should be a pure meritocracy, and access to equipment should not be the deciding factor in the career of an artist. We offer resources such as video and audio equipment, live productions, promotional services, and networking opportunities. Soulard Nation encourages artists to pursue independent careers, and exists to be the bedrock for artists in St. Louis to build their careers on.
What does Soulard Nation want to do?
We have the intention of using our live events to grow an online following. We record and live stream these events to provide artists with high quality clips of their performances for free. We are currently scaling our events in preparation for the Soulard Nation Block Party. This event will be held at the end of Summer 2024 as a thank you to the neighborhood that we call home. We encourage all performing artists to grow online followings of their own. In 10 years, we will have 1 million followers across all social media platforms.
Why should you support Soulard Nation?
By combining our efforts, we can build the infrastructure necessary to support an online following much quicker than any one of us can by ourselves. We can then use this infrastructure to create individual followings of our own to support ourselves. As the shows grow in popularity, so will we. With a united front, St. Louis entertainers can create a sustainable online following to support our artistic careers.
What else does Soulard Nation want to produce?
Soulard Nation Spotlight Series
The model of the show is based on concepts from successful online showcases including NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, the comedy showcase Kill Tony, and The Moth Radio Hour.
It is a showcase of St. Louis performing artists with commentary from a panel of St. Louis personalities
The intention of the panel is to help audiences connect to the artists as developing personalities. We would like to showcase their growth and development week after week. We are creating a group of people who want to meet every week to hang out and make something great together. Original works are encouraged, but artists are allowed to perform anything they wish.
How will Soulard Nation create a national following?
Funds will be raised through the live shows and community outreach events to cover the labor and infrastructure costs of these events (security, trash collection, restrooms, permits, sound equipment, lighting, etc.). All Soulard Nation events are free to the public, with VIP experiences available for purchase.
All artists who perform on the show will have the option to be tagged on all social media pages and given clips to post on their own social media pages. By bringing artists with a following onto the show, we can increase both of our followings at no cost to each other. It’s a positive sum game. By tagging clips of these performers online, and encouraging them to do the same, we can share audiences and everyone benefits.
Artists featured on the show will be performing musicians and panel guests, including local comics, radio hosts, promoters, and other Soulard personalities.
Peer to Peer Promotion
As the online following grows, we will have a larger audience to offer others with an online following. This is the process of peer to peer promotion. Our first 1000 followers are found in person during the live events. When we have 1000 followers, we can bring guests who have 1000 followers. Chances are, we will each gain at least 1 new follower from this interaction. When we get to 10k followers, we can offer that to others with 10k followers, and chances are we will get more than 1 new follower from the interaction, and so will they. There is a constant stream of regionally touring acts with 10k - 50k followers passing through St. Louis who are looking to sell tickets to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night shows. With a large enough following, we can invite these acts to the show on Thursdays to promote their concerts to sell tickets for them (the same way an artist goes on local morning radio to promote their upcoming weekend in St. Louis). Once we get to 50k followers, we will have a large enough audience to offer to nationally touring acts with 50k followers. There is no upper limit to this growth.
What is the end goal of Soulard Nation?
The goal of this organization is to create the infrastructure necessary for St. Louis artists to reach a national audience. With this infrastructure, we will encourage St. Louis artists to grow sustainable, independent online followings of their own.
We intend to grow a national following large enough to invite any touring act on the show and promote their upcoming St. Louis performances. The goal is to become a favorite stop for performing artists who are visiting St. Louis on tour.
Once Soulard Nation has created a sustainable online following, we will dedicate our efforts toward the development and promotion of local artists and community outreach programs. Soulard Nation is a proud supporter of our local community. By starting as local as possible, we can make the largest impact. We live in Soulard, we play in Soulard, we are Soulard.
Any excess funds from this organization go towards community involvement events that encourage interaction between performers and neighbors. These events include concerts in the park, watch parties and tailgates for sporting events,, and other gestures to remind our neighbors how much we enjoy having them around!
